Kim Aris, the son of Myanmar's imprisoned former prime minister Aung San Suu Kyi, rang her from London Thursday.
He posted a short video on Facebook, his voice trembling as he said, "Today, I was finally able to speak with my mother, after more than five years." The clip also shows him standing outside the Myanmar embassy in London, a small crowd of supporters in the background.
Suu Kyi, 81, has been confined to a house in Naypyidaw since the 2021 military coup that ousted her, a fact that has drawn global condemnation.
The call, while symbolic, does not change her status; she remains under house arrest with no routine visits scheduled.
The image of her son in front of the embassy, holding her hand in the air, resonated with people worldwide, highlighting the personal cost of political oppression.
