Tamil Nadu Governor Demands Proof of Majority From TVK Ahead of CM Formation
Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar has demanded that the Viduthalai Chirutha Kamaraj (TVK) party provide documentary proof of a majority before it can be invited to form the state government.
TVK chief V. Vijay has announced plans to file a court case after the Governor refused to accept the party’s statement that it had the numbers to govern.
Vijay, who won 108 seats in the 233‑member assembly, must vacate one seat, bringing its effective tally to 107 and falling nine seats short of the 117 needed for a majority. The party’s alliance with the Congress, which secured five seats, is being tested as the Governor insists on formal evidence of support.
TVK has sought legal advice from senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi and is exploring all options to challenge the Governor’s demand.
The next step will be a court hearing on the legality of the Governor’s requirement; meanwhile the Governor will continue to insist on documentary proof before any further moves toward a Chief Ministerial appointment.
