A woman named Anusua Saha tried to stab former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with a knife outside Banerjee’s Kalighat residence on Tuesday evening around 6 pm.
The incident unfolded as Banerjee stepped out to inaugurate a Durga Puja pandal at the Milan Sangha Puja complex, and her companions immediately intercepted the assailant, handing her over to police.
TMC member Dola Sen filed a formal complaint, describing Saha as a known civic volunteer and drug addict who, in an intoxicated state, hurled abuses and brandished a knife.
Police said they are reviewing video footage and questioning witnesses, and have opened a criminal case under Section 173 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, noting the incident could be part of a conspiracy.
