The blaze erupted at about 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at Biswas’s home in Dhulian, Murshidabad district, forcing residents to scramble for escape routes as thick smoke billowed.
Several fire tenders were called immediately, and the fire was brought under control within an hour, though the cause remains under investigation.
Biswas was rescued and rushed to a private nursing home owned by him, where he is currently receiving treatment. The hospital officials say his burns are severe but stable, and he could soon be shifted to the Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital for specialist care.
The incident has drawn sharp comments from political leaders across the spectrum. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said he was “concerned” and wished Biswas a swift recovery, while Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury offered prayers and support.
Rebel TMC leader Ritabrata Banerjee, a close ally of Biswas, posted a message of condolence on X, promising to visit him when possible.
The fire also exposed the household’s bidi business operations, prompting police to examine whether the blaze could have been accidental or intentional. The investigation will resume next week, as authorities aim to rule out foul play or negligence.
The political fallout is already under way, with opposition parties calling for a thorough probe and the TMC seeking measures to secure the safety of its members.
