Bus-Tanker Collision Kills 16 in Indonesia's North Musi Rawas Regency
A passenger bus and a diesel fuel tanker collided in North Musi Rawas Regency on Indonesia’s Sumatra Island on May 6, 2026, killing 16 people and injuring four others, a disaster agency official said. Fourteen bus passengers and two people from the tanker died in the crash, according to Hasbi Hasidqi, who cited initial reports of a tyre burst leading to a loss of control and a massive fire.
Four injured victims were hospitalised, three with serious burns, an emergency official said. Local television broadcast images of wreckage engulfed in flames after the tanker, which was carrying diesel, caught fire following the impact.
The driver lost control after the suspected tyre failure and crashed into the tanker, igniting the blaze that destroyed both vehicles, Mr. Hasidqi said. Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims or confirmed the registration details of the vehicles involved.
Police and disaster response teams are conducting an on-site investigation to confirm the cause and assess compliance with transport safety regulations. The injured remain under medical care as authorities compile a formal report on the incident.
