BJP Andhra Pradesh president P.V.N. Madhav on Friday demanded immediate government action against those responsible for violent incidents in Almaspet, Kadapa, sparked by a proposal to rename a local centre after 18th-century ruler Tipu Sultan. He called for a thorough investigation to identify and prosecute the individuals and groups behind the unrest.
In a press release, Madhav stated that the BJP firmly opposes the renaming proposal, citing public sentiment and historical concerns. He urged police to ensure that the situation does not escalate along political or religious lines and called for enhanced security for an upcoming bike rally organised by Hindu religious groups in the region.
The violence in Almaspet follows growing tensions over the renaming plan, which has drawn sharp criticism from Hindu groups who view Tipu Sultan as a controversial figure. The district administration has increased security presence amid fears of further clashes.
Madhav reiterated that law and order must be upheld impartially and called on the state government to take preventive measures. The Kadapa police have registered cases related to the violence and are conducting inquiries, with no arrests reported as of Friday evening.
