India Advocates for Inclusive Migration, Anti-Trafficking Laws at UN

India's Union Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh has called for an inclusive and humane framework for migration at the United Nations General Assembly, addressing the challenges of irregular migration and trafficking. Singh stated that India manages migration through a holistic and pragmatic framework, focusing on protecting migrants and fostering international cooperation.
India has concluded comprehensive bilateral mobility agreements and MoUs with 23 countries to create sustainable pathways for fair and ethical mobility. The country has also strengthened consular protection through the 'MADAD' grievance redressal portal and Migrant Resource Centres (MRCs).
According to a report by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), India to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and India to the U.S. were among the top 10 international country-to-country migration corridors in 2024. India has been the top remittance receiving country in the world since 2010, with $137.67 billion received in 2024.
The Indian government has taken steps to equip migrants with essential knowledge, including their rights and cultural awareness of the host country, through skilling initiatives and pre-departure orientation. The Indian Community Welfare Fund (ICWF) has provided emergency assistance, legal support, and repatriation services to Indian nationals since its inception in 2009.
The United Nations will continue to address the issues of migration and trafficking, with the International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) set to resume discussions on implementing the Global Compact for Migration (GCM).
