Rajya Sabha MP from Andhra Pradesh Mastan Rao Yadav has appealed to the Centre to develop an integrated multi-modal logistics corridor along the Buckingham Canal in SPSR Nellore district, which measures 426 km in length and is part of the National Waterway-4. The canal remains dry during non-monsoon periods and is prone to encroachment in some stretches.
Mr. Yadav recently made a special mention in Parliament on the need to develop the logistics project, stating that a pilot project would bring down logistics costs, reduce traffic congestion on National Highways, and create local employment.
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal responded to the special mention, pointing to the hydrographic survey undertaken by the Inland Waterways Authority of India on NW-4 and asked Mr. Yadav to wait for its outcome.
The Minister also emphasized the role of the State government in removing encroachments and restoring damaged structures along the canal.
The Centre will review the proposal and the hydrographic survey outcome, with the next steps expected to involve consultations with the State government and stakeholders to determine the feasibility and implementation of the proposed logistics corridor.
