BSE‑listed companies shed ₹20 lakh crore in market capitalisation as the Nifty slipped 2% this week, with midcap and smallcap indices down 6% and 7% respectively— a sharp reversal from last week’s gains.
Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) offloaded a cumulative ₹2,697 crore of equity shares, whereas domestic institutional investors (DIIs) poured in ₹10,942 crore across the four trading sessions, a net inflow of ₹8,245 crore, according to BSE data.
The selling pattern was uneven: FIIs sold ₹1,148.64 crore on Monday, ₹3,458.70 crore on Thursday, but bought ₹1,022.32 crore on Wednesday and ₹887.65 crore on Friday, the only days of net buying.
DIIs maintained a steady buying trend, purchasing ₹3,201.19 crore on Monday, ₹2,891.32 crore on Thursday, ₹1,614.32 crore on Wednesday and ₹3,235.36 crore on Friday, as reported by BSE.
Market breadth remains thin—only six Nifty stocks closed in the green, and only six of the 100 midcap stocks ended the week higher. Top Nifty losers included Tata Motors, Trent, Nestle India, Shriram Finance and Adani Enterprises, while midcap heavyweights such as Swiggy and KEI Industries fell sharply.
Looking ahead, DIIs’ sustained buying could act as a floor for the market, but the weak breadth and the loss of ₹20 lakh crore in market cap signal caution. Traders will be watching the upcoming RBI policy meeting and the next earnings cycle for further direction.
