Reeyan Mistry, a senior at Westwood Academy in Addison, Texas, brought his two grandmothers — one from India and one from Africa — to his prom, choosing them over a traditional date. Dressed in sarees, the grandmothers attended the event at the private school, which has only 17 seniors in its graduating class, according to local reports. Mistry said the decision was emotional but simple, driven by gratitude for their lifelong support.
Mistry's mother, Trisha Mistry, recalled that her son had promised the grandmothers during his childhood that he would take them to prom. In preparation, the two women styled their hair, applied makeup, and did their nails, mirroring typical prom preparations. Trisha described the moment as akin to having two daughters ready for the dance, emphasizing the collective effort in raising her son.
'We definitely could use more Reeyans,' said Head of School Heather Lourcey, applauding Mistry's choice. Both of Mistry's parents, Jignesh 'Jay' Mistry and Trisha Mistry, also attended the event. The court will resume hearing on Tuesday.
