Abhijeet Wanjari, the Congress candidate, captured 67,231 votes to secure the Nagpur Graduates’ constituency seat in Maharashtra. His tally surpassed the 63,960 votes of BJP’s Sudhakar Kohale, the margin 3,271 votes.
Nagpur is the cradle of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the political home of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. A win here is a rare feather in the Congress’s cap, given the city’s long‑standing alignment with the BJP and the RSS.
After the result, Fadnavis erased his X post that mocked the opposition, in a move that drew attention across social media.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had spent hours on the ground, rallying support for Kohale. Despite his outreach, the BJP candidate trailed Wanjari from the opening round, losing by 4,294 votes after the second count.
The victory is part of a wider MLC wave, with the Maha Vikas Aghadi winning three of five seats in Maharashtra, while the BJP‑led Mahayuti secured two.
