Fifteen security officials were killed and several others injured in a suicide vehicle bombing and subsequent militant attack on a police post in Bannu district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Pakistani police said on Saturday, May 10, 2026. The explosion occurred when security forces opened fire on an approaching explosive-laden vehicle, triggering a blast that flattened the police post and damaged nearby homes.
The blast was immediately followed by an assault from a large group of militants who launched a coordinated attack on the post, leading to a prolonged exchange of fire. The police post was completely destroyed, with several personnel trapped under the rubble. A Bannu police spokesperson confirmed the death toll and injuries but provided no figures on militant casualties or arrests.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi condemned the attack as a 'cowardly act' and directed authorities to provide full medical care to the wounded. He pledged that such violence would not weaken public or police resolve.
The region has seen recurring militant activity, particularly since the collapse of a ceasefire with the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in 2022. Security forces have previously intercepted similar vehicle-borne attacks, including one in South Waziristan last week that injured seven.
No group has claimed responsibility for the Bannu attack. Investigations are ongoing, and security forces have heightened patrols in the area. Provincial authorities will review security protocols at all police outposts in the coming days.
