Karnataka Government Faces Pushback Over School Merger Plan

The Karnataka government's plan to merge 317 government schools under the PM Shri School initiative and KPS Magnet Scheme has drawn sharp criticism from villagers, parents, and the All India Democratic Students Organisation (AIDSO), which claims the move effectively shuts down neighborhood schools. AIDSO's Mysuru unit accused the state of contradicting its '8 Guarantees' education promise by closing schools while promoting model education reforms.
The organisation cited the case of Arsikere froep in Hassan district, where students from 15 villages—including Hallakatte, M.V. Hatti, Hire Sadarahalli, and Holalkere—are slated to be transferred to D.M. Kurke KPS Magnet School, affecting around 305 students. School Development and Monitoring Committee members, parents, and villagers have submitted representations to the Block Education Officer and state authorities, demanding the retention of local schools.
AIDSO also alleged that Pre-University colleges are being merged alongside primary and secondary schools, intensifying concerns over access to education in rural areas. The group's Mysuru district secretary, Nitin, called on the government to halt the merger process and urged public support for the 'Save Our Neighbourhood School' campaign.
The government has not yet issued a public response, but the opposition is expected to escalate as affected communities await official clarification. The court or education department is likely to review the representations soon, with further developments anticipated in the coming weeks.
