Nike has signed a multi‑year kit deal with Mumbai Indians, starting in 2027, marking its first IPL partnership since 2008. The iconic Swoosh will appear on MI jerseys for the first time in nearly two decades, a move that feels like a homecoming for the brand.
Under the new agreement, MI staff will begin wearing the gear this month, while the women's and men's squads are slated to debut it in their respective seasons. The deal places the Swoosh on premium retail space, a spot that clubs like Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Chennai Super Kings routinely demand between ₹40‑60 crore per season.
Nike’s return follows a long history in Indian cricket. The company was the national team’s kit sponsor from 2006 to 2020, before handing the reins to MPL Sports, Killer Jeans and then Adidas. Earlier, Nike backed the now‑defunct Deccan Chargers in 2008. "Nike would have been too early, when merchandise was still a novelty," said Vinit Karnik, a veteran marketer.
The partnership promises better fabrics and performance‑boosting technology for MI players, mirroring what global football clubs do with their match kits. Players will benefit from advanced moisture‑wicking fabrics that keep them cool under the Delhi sun, while fans can soon buy replica jerseys that cost less than the ₹5,000 replicas of the past.
With the deal looming, MI’s next challenge is to convert the hype into on‑field success. The 2027 season kicks off with a high‑stakes clash against Delhi Capitals, and every point will count as the squad prepares to showcase Nike’s new look on the field.
