C. Joseph Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), was sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday at a ceremony held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office and secrecy to Vijay and nine ministers, marking the first non-Dravidian government in the state's history. Top Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attended the event, where oaths were taken in the name of God, a departure from the previous DMK administration's practice.
The newly inducted ministers are N. Anand, Aadhav Arjuna, Dr. K.G. Arunraj, K.A. Sengottaiyan, P. Venkataramanan, R. Nirmalkumar, Rajmohan, Dr. T.K. Prabhu, and Selvi S. Keerthana. The TVK government has secured unconditional support from the VCK and IUML, enabling it to form the administration despite not winning a majority in the Assembly.
This political shift ends the decades-long dominance of the AIADMK and DMK in Tamil Nadu's governance. Vijay is required to prove his majority on the floor of the Legislative Assembly on or before May 13. The court will resume hearing on Tuesday.
