BJP Set to Form First Government in West Bengal After Historic Assembly Win
The Bharatiya Janata Party is set to form its first government in West Bengal after winning 207 seats in the 294-member State Legislative Assembly, defeating the ruling Trinamool Congress, which secured only 80 seats. The election outcome marks a dramatic shift in the state's political landscape and the BJP's first victory in Bengal.
Governor RN Ravi dissolved the West Bengal Legislative Assembly with effect from May 7, following the completion of its term and the conclusion of the two-phase elections. The official notification was issued by the Department of Parliamentary Affairs, formalizing the end of the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government, though she did not sign the dissolution order.
A list of 10 senior BJP leaders is under consideration for inclusion in the new state cabinet, including Suvendu Adhikari, Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Nishith Pramanik, Roopa Ganguly, Swapan Dasgupta, Shankar Ghosh, Tapas Roy, Ashok Dinda, and Dr. Rajesh Kumar. The identity of the next Chief Minister remains unconfirmed, with senior party leaders expected to finalize the decision soon.
The swearing-in ceremony for the new government is likely to be held on May 9, party sources indicate, as the BJP prepares to take charge of the state administration. The Election Commission has yet to issue a formal notification on the results, while the TMC has not publicly conceded defeat.
