BJP's Rajiv Jain Faces Congress's Kamal Dewan in Tense Sonipat Mayoral Election

Incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party mayor Rajiv Jain is locked in a tight re-election battle with Congress candidate Kamal Dewan ahead of the Sonipat Municipal Corporation mayoral election on May 10. Jain, who won a bypoll in March 2025 after former Congress mayor Nikhil Madan defected to the BJP, has launched an intensive campaign across the city's 22 wards, citing infrastructure improvements in water supply, sewage, roads, and sanitation as central to his pitch.
Jain, a four-decade political veteran and husband of former Haryana Urban Local Bodies Minister Kavita Jain, held a religious visit at Nirankari Bhawan on Sunday before launching a day of 30 public meetings. He claimed 175 development projects were inaugurated during his nine-month tenure, with 40 more in progress. Dewan, who lost the 2025 bypoll by 34,749 votes, attributed that defeat to low turnout and the aftermath of Congress's poor performance in the 2024 Assembly elections. He has since been appointed Sonipat district Congress president and is campaigning on allegations of corruption and unpaid salaries to municipal workers.
Senior leaders from both parties are actively involved in the campaign. Congress MP Deepender Hooda has been canvassing across the four Assembly segments within the municipal area, while the BJP has deployed MP Manoj Tiwari to engage Purvanchali voters and Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini to meet ward-level constituents. BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj is also expected to campaign. Political observers note that Punjabi voters, who make up 20% of the electorate, could be decisive.
Real estate developer Praveen Arora, a local observer, said delays in completing infrastructure projects and alleged corruption in routine municipal work have hurt the BJP's standing, though Jain's experience gives him an edge over Dewan. Despite the Hooda family's historical influence in the region, Jain pointed to the BJP's 2024 Assembly win in four of six seats in the area as evidence of shifting political dynamics.
The election results will be declared shortly after polling on May 10, with officials expecting a higher turnout than the 27% recorded during the 2025 bypoll. The Sonipat Municipal Corporation, one of Haryana's richest with a ₹625 crore annual budget and over 300,000 voters, has become a key battleground for both parties.
