ZSI to Host 111-Hour Hackathon on Traditional Biodiversity Knowledge
The Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) will organize a 111-hour national hackathon starting on May 25, 2026, at the Western Ghat Regional Centre in Kozhikode, to commemorate 111 years of scientific excellence. The hackathon aims to bridge the gap between indigenous knowledge systems and modern technology to address critical challenges in global biodiversity conservation.
The event will bring together innovators, including students, researchers, technologists, and indigenous knowledge holders, to co-create sustainable solutions for the natural world. Participants will work on projects such as mobile and web applications for conservation tracking, AI algorithms, and community-driven policy frameworks.
The regional event in Kozhikode will focus on the theme “Traditional Biodiversity Knowledge in Kerala/Karnataka” and will offer prizes of up to ₹1 lakh for exceptional innovations. The grand finale of the competition will be held at the ZSI headquarters in Kolkata.
The competition is open to teams of up to three members, with no age restrictions, and the deadline for submitting applications is May 20. Interested participants can register through the official portal, www.hackathon.zsi.org.in.
The ZSI will announce the winners of the hackathon after the grand finale, and the selected innovations will be showcased at the ZSI headquarters in Kolkata. The court will not be involved in this case, however, the ZSI will resume the hackathon events with the announcement of the winners and the next steps for the selected projects.
