On Feb 24, 2011, Best Friends Animal Society announced that actress Denise Richards would host a monthly feature on Access Hollywood Live, aiming to spotlight adoptable dogs. The first dog appeared. Rascal, a tan Chihuahua rescued in Los Angeles, was introduced, prompting immediate interest from viewers.
Beyond the studio, Richards adopted Preston, a blind dog rescued by Best Friends, after her mother’s pet died. She said, "I wanted to give a dog that needed extra care a chance."
The program’s reach extended beyond the airwaves; Best Friends noted that several animals appeared on Good Day LA and other shows, with some adopting within a day. Jf Pryor, Best Friends’ mobile adoption coordinator, said, "We see new inquiries immediately after a TV spot." Clarice, a German shepherd/Shiba Inu mix, and Lou Who, a Yorkshire terrier mix, were adopted after being featured.
Best Friends plans to continue the partnership, expanding to other media outlets and hosting live adoption events. For the families who adopted, the change is immediate; a couple in Santa Monica reported the dog settled in quickly, bringing joy after a long wait.
