Auto drivers’ associations in Bengaluru have petitioned the government to increase the minimum auto meter fare, citing the continuous rise in auto LPG prices. The current minimum fare is ₹36, with passengers charged ₹18 for every additional kilometre, but the associations are seeking a revision to ₹50 and ₹25 per km.
The price of auto LPG has surged from around ₹56 per litre to nearly ₹95 per litre in Bengaluru, severely affecting the livelihood of drivers. Murali K., an auto driver, said the rising fuel costs have made it difficult for drivers to earn a sustainable income.
Indian Vehicle Drivers’ Trade Union president Gandasi Sadananda Swamy acknowledged that the demand for a fare hike could inconvenience commuters but stated that drivers have no other option.
Commuters have expressed mixed reactions to the demand, with some suggesting a more moderate fare increase and others opposing any hike.
The Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner's office is expected to review the petition and consider the demand for a fare hike, with a decision expected in the coming days.
