The Indian government has disbursed nearly Rs 25,160 crore in claims under the Jan Suraksha social security schemes since their 2015 launch, with over 90 crore enrolments recorded across Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) and Atal Pension Yojana (APY), Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced Saturday. PMJJBY has seen over 27 crore registrations and paid Rs 21,500 crore to 10.7 lakh families, while PMSBY disbursed Rs 3,660 crore to 1.84 lakh families since inception.
Eligible individuals enroll through bank or post office accounts, with minimal annual premiums: Rs 436 for Rs 2 lakh life cover under PMJJBY and Rs 20 for accident insurance under PMSBY. APY, targeting unorganised sector workers, has over 9 crore enrolments and guarantees pensions of Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 monthly after age 60, based on contributions. As of April 2026, PMSBY had 27.45 crore female enrollees and 19.30 crore linked to PMJDY accounts, reflecting broad inclusion.
The schemes were launched on May 9, 2015, to expand financial protection for vulnerable populations and strengthen long-term resilience through accessible insurance and pension coverage. Digitisation through the online Jan Suraksha Portal has streamlined enrolment and claims processing, eliminating the need for physical bank visits, according to Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary.
The government credited banks, insurance providers and field staff for the schemes’ reach and efficiency. Officials reaffirmed commitment to expanding participation, particularly among women and informal workers.
The Ministry of Finance plans to continue outreach and digital integration to boost enrolment and claim settlements, with the next review scheduled for mid-2026.
