NDA leaders, led by Chief Minister-elect Himanta Biswa Sarma, met Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at Lok Bhavan on May 10, 2026, and formally staked claim to form the government after winning a decisive majority in the Assam Assembly elections. The Governor received a signed application from the alliance, representing the BJP, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF).
The NDA secured 102 seats in the 126-member assembly, with the BJP winning 82, AGP 10, and BPF 10. Earlier in the day, Sarma was elected leader of the BJP-led alliance in the Assam legislative assembly. This will be the NDA's third consecutive term in Assam, having first come to power in 2016 under Sarbananda Sonowal.
Sarma, who took office in 2021, is set to become the first non-Congress chief minister in Assam to serve two successive terms. Union Minister J.P. Nadda and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, appointed as central observers, accompanied Sarma during the meeting. The alliance submitted a list of supporting legislators to the Governor.
The Governor is expected to invite Sarma to form the government, with the swearing-in ceremony likely within the coming days.
