Jaskaran Saroye, a 27-year-old man of Indian origin, was arrested in Surrey, British Columbia, after police linked him to a shooting at an occupied residence tied to ongoing extortion violence. He has been charged with discharging a firearm into a place while knowing or being reckless as to whether someone was present inside.
Surrey Police Service executed a search warrant at a residential property on April 13, shortly after gunshots were fired at a home near 94A Avenue and 127 Street around 3 a.m. The house sustained damage, but no injuries were reported. Investigators identified a suspect vehicle that led to Saroye's arrest, assisted by the Lower Mainland District Emergency Response Team and other SPS units.
Police have released Saroye's photograph in hopes of identifying further individuals connected to suspected extortion networks operating in the region. Chief Constable Norm Lipinski called the gunfire incident 'extremely serious' and emphasized the threat such acts pose to public safety, particularly amid rising extortion-related violence targeting the South Asian community in Surrey.
Saroye remains in custody and is scheduled to appear at a bail hearing. The court will determine his pre-trial status, while police continue to investigate potential links to organized crime and related offenses in the area.
