Assam Lawyer Assaulted by Revenue Officer in Azara, 2024 Video Goes Viral

A woman lawyer was assaulted by Revenue Circle Officer Biplab Sharma Bordoloi's office staff in Azara, near Guwahati, on 20 March 2024.

The incident unfolded when the lawyer, representing a land‑acquisition case, entered the office seeking a hearing. An argument erupted with officer Bipul Deka, after which Bordoloi summoned her to a private chamber where she was struck and her phone was snatched while she tried to film the assault.

A video captured Bastab Raman Barman pushing the lawyer against an almirah, and the clip has since gone viral on social media. The lawyer claims the officer threatened to revoke her license if she continued the case. She immediately filed a complaint at the Azara police station against Deka, Bordoloi and Barman.

Police officials confirmed they are investigating the FIR and are reviewing the video evidence. The case has been forwarded to the district court, where a hearing is scheduled for 15 April 2024.

The lawyer, who has been practicing for five years, expressed fear that the incident could jeopardise her career. She said she will pursue legal action against the officers for assault and intimidation, citing the need for accountability in public offices.
