The Communist Party of India (CPI) will seek the post of Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly after the 2026 elections, its state secretary Binoy Viswam said in Thiruvananthapuram. The move comes as the LDF, reduced to 35 seats, plans its legislative strategy.
The Communist Party of India (CPI) will formally stake a claim for the post of Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Legislative Assembly, state secretary Binoy Viswam announced on Friday in Thiruvananthapuram. The Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by the CPI(M), won 35 of 140 seats in the May 2026 Assembly elections, with the CPI securing eight seats as the alliance's second-largest party. Viswam confirmed the Leader of the Opposition would come from the CPI(M), but asserted the CPI's right to the deputy position, citing precedents and alliance strength.
