Rico Gedel and Samuel Dodsworth are facing murder charges over the fatal stabbing of former Welsh singer and songwriter Ian Watkins inside HMP Wakefield prison on October 11. According to the prosecution, Gedel stabbed Watkins with a homemade blade, inflicting severe injuries to his head and neck, and later boasted about his 'fame' after the attack.
The prosecution claims that Gedel launched the attack shortly after inmates on B Wing were released from their cells around 9 am, and that CCTV footage captured him entering Watkins' cell and leaving roughly 20 seconds later.
Witnesses described chaotic scenes following the attack, with two maintenance workers reportedly seeing Watkins briefly emerge from his cell wearing a bloodstained T-shirt before prison staff intervened.
The court heard that Gedel had been transferred to the same prison wing as Watkins and Dodsworth the day before the killing and was placed in the cell adjacent to Watkins before the incident. The trial will continue, with the prosecution presenting further evidence against Gedel and Dodsworth.
