The Noida Authority has approved plans to develop a 10-lane bypass along the Yamuna River embankment from Sector 94 to Gharbara village in Greater Noida, aiming to ease traffic congestion ahead of the Noida International Airport's commercial launch on June 15. The route will serve as an alternative to the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway and connect directly to the Yamuna Expressway.
The current four-lane road will first be expanded to six lanes, then upgraded to 10 lanes to meet future demand, with integration into the 5.9-km Chilla Elevated Road corridor from Mayur Vihar to Mahamaya Flyover, scheduled for completion by December next year. A 1.4-km elevated link from Mahamaya Flyover to Okhla Bird Sanctuary Metro Station will allow seamless access from Delhi without entering the expressway.
Noida Authority CEO Krishna Karunesh said traffic volume is expected to rise significantly after the airport opens, necessitating the road expansion. Officials from UPEIDA and the irrigation department have inspected the alignment, and a feasibility report will be followed by a Detailed Project Report. The project cost will be shared by Noida, Greater Noida, and Yamuna authorities.
A LocalCircles survey cited in Business Standard found 90% of air travelers in Delhi-NCR are unlikely to use the Noida airport, citing higher fares and charges compared to Indira Gandhi International Airport, where domestic landing fees are 119% lower. IndiGo will launch operations at the Jewar airport on June 15 with flights to Lucknow, Bengaluru, Amritsar, Hyderabad, and Jammu, expanding to over 16 destinations in coming weeks.
The Noida Authority will finalize the feasibility assessment and Detailed Project Report in the coming months, with construction expected to proceed in phases alongside the Chilla Elevated Road. The full corridor is intended to be operational as airport traffic increases.
