A 61-year-old New York City Department of Environmental Protection worker, John Toledo, escaped injury Thursday at around 6:00 a.m. when a heavy piece of debris crashed onto his car from the ceiling of the Trans-Manhattan Expressway tunnel in Manhattan. The section, part of I-95 beneath the Bridge Apartments in Washington Heights, connects the George Washington Bridge to the Cross Bronx Expressway and is maintained by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
Dashcam footage posted by Toledo to Reddit shows the slab striking the front of his vehicle, blowing out a tire and leaving the car severely damaged. Toledo said he was seconds from being directly under the impact zone: "If I would have been one or two more seconds further forward, it could have come through the windshield, and I wouldn't be speaking to you."
The Port Authority confirmed it would conduct additional overnight inspections of the tunnel's ceiling panels, including lane closures for a full assessment and immediate repairs if needed. Officials have not yet identified the cause of the detachment.
Toledo, who sustained no injuries, said he is seeking only compensation for his vehicle repairs and urged a comprehensive safety review to prevent future incidents. The court will resume hearing on Tuesday.
