Stalin Urges New Tamil Nadu Government to Continue DMK Welfare Schemes

Outgoing Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin urged the new government to continue the welfare schemes launched by the DMK regime, emphasizing their benefit to women, youth, students, and marginalised communities. In a social media post on May 9, 2026, Stalin said the State's development would persist if these programmes were sustained.
Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) will form the government after securing support from 120 MLAs in the 234-member Assembly, ending political uncertainty following a hung verdict. TVK received backing from VCK, IUML, and other former DMK alliance partners, even as the Congress severed ties with the DMK post-election.
Stalin acknowledged the departure of Congress but welcomed the continued allegiance of CPI(M), CPI, and VCK leaders, calling it a sign of their faith in the DMK. He also thanked alliance partners who publicly expressed solidarity during the transition.
Vijay met Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at Raj Bhavan in Chennai on Saturday evening to formally stake claim to form the government. The Governor will decide on the swearing-in date, with official proceedings expected within the coming days.
