A British Columbia Supreme Court judge has convicted Gurkaran Singh, Abhijeet Singh, and Khushveer Toor of first-degree murder in the May 2022 deaths of Arnold and Joanne De Jong in Abbotsford. Justice Brenda Brown ruled on May 8, 2026, that the three men played a willing and integral role in the killings, which she found were financially motivated.
The victims, both in their 70s, were found bound and dead in separate bedrooms of their home, with Arnold De Jong’s head wrapped in duct tape and Joanne De Jong showing signs of trauma. Prosecutors presented DNA evidence, rope matching that used at the scene, a metal baseball bat from the defendants’ vehicle, and digital data showing Abhijeet Singh searched how murderers are punished in Canada after the killings.
The three men, all in their 20s and former coworkers at a cleaning company that had serviced the De Jongs’ home, had pleaded not guilty to two counts each of first-degree murder. The prosecution argued they planned both the robbery and the killings, stealing credit cards, cheques, and a power washer from the residence.
Justice Brown rejected the defence claim that the deaths resulted from a robbery gone wrong, affirming the killings were deliberate and coordinated. Sentencing for the three convicted men is scheduled for May 28, 2026.
