Amos Yee, a 27-year-old Singaporean YouTuber, was assaulted outside the Doujima anime convention at Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre on May 9. The incident occurred when a teenager dressed as Yuji Itadori from the anime series Jujutsu Kaisen punched and kicked Yee during a chaotic confrontation.
The assault was captured on video and circulated online, reigniting debate around Yee's public image and his history of controversies. Yee has been involved in several scandals, including criticism of Singapore's former prime minister and videos mocking religion, which led to multiple arrests in the mid-2010s.
Yee was granted political asylum in the United States in 2017 but was later sentenced to prison in 2021 for grooming-related offenses and possession of explicit material involving minors. He was deported to Singapore in March 2026 and faced additional legal scrutiny tied to National Service obligations.
The Doujima convention organizers had announced on Instagram that Yee would not be allowed entry, citing him as a 'known problematic influencer.' Yee still appeared near the convention venue and shared photos from outside the event, blaming the organizers for escalating tensions around his presence.
The 18-year-old cosplayer involved in the attack was later arrested for causing public nuisance. The incident is currently under investigation, and the authorities have not commented on the next steps in the case. The court is expected to hear the case in the coming days.
