Three people are dead and several hikers are missing after Indonesia's Mount Dukono erupted on Friday morning, sending a 10,000-metre ash column into the sky. The eruption prompted a desperate evacuation, with a harrowing video showing a tour guide racing to lead a group of tourists to safety.
The victims included one Indonesian citizen and two tourists from Singapore, according to reports. The North Halmahera police chief stated that the tourists had ignored warning signs, despite the volcano showing increased activity over the past month.
A total of 20 hikers had entered the volcano area, despite a climbing ban. The volcano is known for its frequent and unpredictable eruptions, posing risks to locals and visitors.
The immediate outlook is that rescue teams will continue searching for the missing hikers, with the situation being closely monitored by local authorities.
