Urvil Patel struck the joint-fastest fifty in Indian Premier League history, reaching the milestone in 13 balls as Chennai Super Kings chased down 204 against Lucknow Super Giants at Chepauk on Sunday. His innings, which matched Yashasvi Jaiswal's 2023 record, featured eight sixes and two fours and shifted momentum decisively in CSK's favour after Sanju Samson's early dismissal.
Patel launched a brutal assault on Avesh Khan and Digvesh Singh Rathi, hitting three sixes in consecutive deliveries and becoming the first batter to smash six sixes within the first eight balls of an IPL innings. He scored 41 off eight balls, setting a new record for the most runs scored in the first eight deliveries of an innings, before finishing with 65 off 23.
After reaching his fifty, Patel revealed a note from his pocket reading, 'This is for you, Papa,' dedicating the innings to his late father. Despite Josh Inglis's 85 off 33 balls, which included the fastest fifty at Chepauk, LSG lost momentum as Jamie Overton took three wickets, and CSK completed the chase via Shivam Dube's final-over sixes.
Ruturaj Gaikwad contributed 42 as CSK won by five wickets with four balls remaining. The court will resume hearing on Tuesday.
