BJP secured three seats and JD(S) one seat in Karnataka's October 23 legislative council elections, leaving the ruling Congress with none. The four contested seats—North‑East Teachers, South‑East Graduates, West Graduates, and Bengaluru Teachers—were swept clean by the NDA.
In the North‑East Teachers constituency, BJP's Shashil G Namoshi claimed a decisive fourth win, defeating Congress candidate Sharanappa Mattur by a margin of 4,500 votes. The South‑East Graduates seat saw KM Suresh of the BJP beat Congress's Shashi Hulikunte Mutt by 3,200 votes, while SV Sankanur of the BJP won the West Graduates seat against Congress's Mohan Limbikai by 2,800 votes. JD(S)'s sole win came in the Bengaluru Teachers constituency, where the party's candidate edged out the Congress contender.
"This is a success for the NDA and all the narratives spread by the Congress have been exposed," BJP leader Ashok Gowda told NDTV early on the day of the results. "The people are clearly saying they don’t want the Congress government," he added.
The council, with 75 seats, currently holds 38 members for Congress, 24 for BJP, six for JD(S), one independent, and a chairman. Five government‑nominated seats remain vacant, meaning the NDA’s gains will be felt immediately in committee assignments and policy debates.
The win gives the NDA a louder voice as it heads into the Bengaluru municipal elections next month. Analysts predict that the coalition will leverage this momentum to press for policy concessions and to challenge Congress's narrative ahead of the next state elections.
A teacher from the North‑East constituency, who had supported the Congress ticket, said the victory felt like a reset. "We saw the numbers and felt our voices mattered," he remarked, hinting at a shift in grassroots sentiment.
With the council now tipped in favor of the NDA, the next major development will be the appointment of committee chairs, expected to be announced in the coming week.
