J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Monday, with several pending files awaiting approval from the Centre, including the Statehood status of Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting assumed significance due to the long list of pending files submitted by the Union Territory government for final approval from the Centre.
The J&K government has been awaiting the final nod from the Centre on a three-member proposal forwarded to Lieutenant-Governor Manoj Sinha over a year ago, aimed at rationalising the existing reservation policy.
A senior National Conference leader noted that the absence of Business Rules, as per the J&K Reorganisation Act 2019, has impacted governance issues, with no clear demarcation of roles between the Chief Minister and the Lieutenant Governor.
The J&K government has also forwarded a file on nominating a new Advocate General, which requires approval from the Lok Bhavan, as the UT has been without an AG since 2024. The court and the government are expected to take further action on these pending files in the coming days, with the J&K government awaiting a response from the Centre on the proposed changes to the reservation policy and the appointment of the new Advocate General.
