Karnataka had the third-largest number of registered corruption cases at 334 for the year 2024, according to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data released on Thursday, May 7. Maharashtra topped the list with 721 cases, followed by another state with 374 cases.
The state, however, stood out in Disproportionate Assets (DA) cases, topping the list at 75, followed by Odisha with 62 cases and Assam with 44 cases.
A senior Lokayukta official attributed the increase in numbers to the regular raids on suspected corrupt officials, which have led to a rise in trap incidents, with 237 cases (60.9%) being trap incidents.
The Lokayukta is focusing on increasing awareness and taking a more proactive approach to address corruption, with plans to strengthen its grassroots reach and increase people's confidence in reporting bribery demands. The next NCRB data for 2025 is expected to reflect the increased efforts of the Lokayukta, with a substantial number of cases registered and consistent raids and follow-ups.
