The U.S. Department of Justice has filed denaturalization proceedings against Debashis Ghosh, a 62-year-old Indian national and naturalized U.S. citizen, over a $2.5 million fraud scheme related to an aircraft maintenance facility project. The department alleges Ghosh conspired to defraud investors before his 2012 naturalization and continued the fraud afterward, while falsely claiming under oath he had never committed a crime for which he was not arrested.
According to the complaint, Ghosh misrepresented the location and security of investor funds and lacked good moral character during the statutory period required for naturalization. The Justice Department asserts he committed a crime involving moral turpitude and willfully concealed material facts during his citizenship application.
The legal action is based on the Immigration and Nationality Act, which allows revocation of citizenship obtained through fraud or willful misrepresentation. Ghosh is one of 12 individuals targeted in a broader denaturalization effort. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that those who concealed criminal histories or supported terrorism should not have been granted citizenship.
The Trump administration has emphasized strict enforcement of naturalization standards, vowing legal action against individuals who misrepresented themselves during the citizenship process. The court will determine the outcome of the complaint in upcoming proceedings.
