Tamil Nadu Governor Says TVK Lacks Support to Form Government
Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has informed TVK chief Vijay that his party lacks the necessary legislative support to form the state government, according to a statement from Lok Bhavan on Thursday. Vijay visited the Governor's residence amid speculation over post-election government formation, though officials did not confirm whether a formal meeting took place or if an invitation was extended.
The Developmental Party of Tamils (TVK), founded by actor Vijay, emerged as a new political force in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections but fell short of a majority. As no single party secured a clear majority, multiple parties have staked claims, triggering a round of consultations with the Governor under constitutional protocol.
Meanwhile, the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) passed a resolution during a high-level meeting criticizing the Indian National Congress for its stance in alliance negotiations. The move underscores growing friction between coalition partners over seat-sharing and power distribution ahead of government formation.
The Governor is expected to invite the leader of the largest pre-poll alliance or the party with demonstrated majority support to form the government after completing all required consultations. The Election Commission has not yet released the official list of claimants.
