The Global Chess League (GCL) will remain in India for its fourth edition, scheduled to take place later this year. The league, a joint venture of Tech Mahindra and the world chess governing body FIDE, was successfully held in Mumbai last December, attracting a good crowd on all days.
The decision to hold the GCL in India again has been backed by Grandmaster Pravin Thipsay, who coached last year's champion Alpine SG Pipers. Thipsay suggested that the league could be held in Chennai, the capital of Indian chess, this year.
GCL Commissioner Gaurav Rakshit attributed the decision to India's passion for the game and its rapidly growing chess ecosystem. FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich noted that the league has injected new energy into the sport by combining world-class competition with an engaging team format.
The immediate next steps for the GCL include finalizing the venue and schedule for the fourth edition, with officials expected to make an announcement in the coming weeks. The league's return to India is expected to further boost the country's growing chess ecosystem and attract a global fanbase.
