Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner H.V. Darshan said Friday the district administration has identified 92 areas with potential flood risk and 88 with landslide risk ahead of the southwest monsoon, with precautionary measures now in place. The assessment follows directives from district-in-charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao to map vulnerable zones and act in advance to prevent disaster.
Darshan stated that silt removal from major stormwater drains, known locally as rajakaluves, is ongoing using earthmovers, with most drains already cleared. Eight coastal locations prone to sea erosion have also been identified, and risk mitigation steps are being implemented. Control rooms have been activated at district and taluk levels to manage emergencies round-the-clock.
Minister Rao directed officials to conduct regular site visits to high-risk zones and respond immediately to emerging threats. He emphasized faster desilting and inter-departmental coordination to ensure preparedness.
A State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team is already deployed in the district, and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are expected to arrive by the end of May. The court will resume hearing on Tuesday.
