Punjabi singer Jasmine Sandlas has re-entered the mainstream music spotlight following the success of the Dhurandhar franchise, with tracks like 'Shararat,' 'Main Aur Tu,' and 'Jaiye Sajana' gaining widespread traction. The resurgence has revived public interest in her personal journey, including her family's early struggles after immigrating to the United States.
Sandlas revealed in a recent interview that her family lived on food stamps after moving to New York, where they resided in a one-bedroom apartment shared by six people. Her father worked at a gas station, while her mother, a former teacher in India, took on factory and seasonal cherry-picking jobs to support the family. They later moved to California, where her father found work as a legal interpreter.
She had little access to formal music training or opportunities, singing only at the local gurudwara. Her parents did not support her pursuit of a music career, viewing it as impractical. Sandlas said she pleaded for six months for a chance to try, promising to quit if unsuccessful—but continued despite not achieving success in that window.
Her big break came in 2014 with the Bollywood hit 'Yaar Naa Miley' from the film Kick, co-written with Yo Yo Honey Singh. Shortly after the song's success, her father passed away, a loss she described as shattering for her family. She said they have yet to fully recover from the emotional impact.
Sandlas continues to perform and record music, with her recent work driving renewed popularity. She has not announced any new projects, but industry sources indicate she is in discussions for upcoming film collaborations.
