Q. Manivannan, an India-born non-binary anthropologist and community organiser, has been elected to the Scottish Parliament as a member of the Scottish Greens, representing the Edinburgh and Lothians East regional list. The vote took place in the May 8, 2026, Scottish parliamentary elections, with results announced on May 10.
Manivannan was eligible to run due to a Scottish Parliament rule change permitting individuals with the right to reside and work in Scotland, including non-UK citizens on valid visas, to stand for office. They are a Commonwealth citizen on a valid visa and have worked with the United Nations, trade unions, and human rights organisations on disability inclusion and feminist urban policy.
The Scottish Greens confirmed Manivannan's election under the regional list system, which allocates 56 seats through proportional representation. A party spokesperson said the parliament's decision to allow non-citizens with residency rights to run reflects Scotland's inclusive approach, while criticising the UK's visa system as 'expensive and hostile'.
Manivannan campaigned on a platform of 'kinder politics', pledging to advocate for working-class, queer, migrant, and marginalised communities. They previously raised £1,600 through a Crowdfunder campaign to support their candidacy.
The Scottish Parliament will convene its new session next week, where Manivannan is expected to take their seat. The Scottish Greens have announced plans to introduce legislation on migrant rights and inclusive governance in the upcoming term.
