The Kerala Congress(M) has blamed cross-voting by Communist Party of India (Marxist) cadres and consolidation of minority communities for its electoral setback in the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections, according to party chairman Jose K. Mani, following a steering committee meeting in Kottayam on Saturday. The party, part of the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), faced a significant defeat despite citing development gains under Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's government.
Jose K. Mani said the KC(M) secured 5.25 lakh votes in 2026, down from 6.81 lakh in 2021, representing a 2.2% decline, and noted that losses in most constituencies were by margins under 10,000 votes. He claimed the party's core base remained intact and announced a detailed post-mortem, with district-level meetings scheduled for May 15 and 16, followed by constituency and ward-level reviews ahead of a consolidated report by May 27.
Mani ruled out merging with the rival KC(M) faction led by P.J. Joseph or joining the United Democratic Front (UDF), calling the merger offer 'completely insincere.' Internal party discussions included criticism of the Pinarayi Vijayan government's governance style and a faction led by Roshy Augustine that opposed an early UDF shift after the 2025 local body polls.
Some leaders expressed concern over potential erosion of the party's cadre base to the rival faction, which is expected to have a growing role in the incoming UDF government. The party leadership has initiated a structured review process to reassess its political strategy.
The KC(M) will submit its findings to the central leadership by May 27, after completing grassroots-level consultations across all districts and constituencies.
