GSI Launches Mineral Survey in Karnataka to Assess Rare Earth and Critical Elements
The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has launched a comprehensive mineral exploration programme in several districts of Karnataka, including Chikkamagaluru and Hassan, to assess potential deposits of rare earth elements (REE), scandium, vanadium, nickel, and tungsten. The survey, approved by the Union Ministry of Mines, commenced in April 2026 and will continue until March 2027.
GSI teams will conduct field operations across remote and ecologically sensitive zones, requiring coordination with forest and local government departments for access and logistical support. The Chikkamagaluru district administration has issued directives to the Zilla Panchayat, police, and forest authorities to provide necessary assistance.
Field personnel will be deployed for a minimum of eight months in project areas, some of which are prone to local disturbances or fall within protected forest regions. The GSI has urged state officials to expedite permissions and ensure the uninterrupted progress of the national mineral assessment drive.
The survey aims to strengthen India's mineral resource base and support strategic development planning. The GSI will continue its fieldwork in coordination with state agencies through the 2026–2027 programme cycle.
