Cibelle Savella, 35, shot her four‑year‑old daughter Vivian inside their Houston residence on Thursday night, hours after a Texas court granted custody to her ex‑husband, Aaron Savella. The decision, announced Tuesday, placed Vivian in Aaron’s primary care, a change that had long been contested by Savella.
Houston Police Department officers arrived at 5:45 p.m. following a 911 call. They found Vivian dead from a gunshot wound to the chest and Savella with a self‑inflicted gunshot to the face. The police transported Savella to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Aaron Savella, whose lawyer Charlotte Rainwater has said the case has shocked him, expressed profound grief. Rainwater, who has 28 years of family‑law experience, noted, "I have never seen anything like this in my career," adding that Aaron had followed every court order.
The Harris County sheriff’s office has taken over the investigation, and a coroner’s report will clarify the exact cause of death. Court proceedings regarding the custody arrangement remain on hold while authorities probe the circumstances.
The tragedy has drawn attention to the intense pressures of custody battles and the potential for extreme outcomes when legal disputes become personal. Residents of the neighborhood are now calling for greater support systems for families in crisis.
