CID’s Architect BP Singh Dies at 77: A Legacy of 111‑Minute Masterpieces

BP Singh’s sudden heart attack on the sidelines of a jungle shoot sent shockwaves through Mumbai’s film studios. The 77‑year‑old, who had already endured a cardiac procedure just months before, was still chasing the adrenaline of a live‑camera chase, a habit that earned him the nickname ‘the cameraman‑producer who never missed a beat.’

Shivaji Satam, the face of ACP Pradyuman, didn’t hold back. ‘He’d never cared for a Padma Shri—his only audience was the living room of every Indian household,’ Satam told Variety, his voice thick with nostalgia. He also recalled the record‑breaking 111‑minute single‑shot episode that took place in a single take, a feat he credits to Singh’s insistence that action be captured in real time.

Dayanand Shetty, who played Daya, added that Singh had lived and breathed content creation. ‘He had no other life but the set,’ Shetty said in HT City, adding that Singh’s hands were still steady even as his heart faltered. He also pointed out that Singh had occasionally stepped in front of the camera as DCP Shamsher Singh Chitrole, proving he could act as well as direct.

Beyond CID, Singh’s fingerprints appear on horror series Aahat, which ran for two decades, and on shows like Khaaki and SuperCops Vs Super Villains. Industry insiders say his approach to lighting and pacing set a new standard for Indian crime dramas. As the community mourns, his legacy will continue to ripple through the set after set, inspiring the next generation of storytellers.
