The Bharatiya Janata Party will formally assume power in West Bengal on Saturday with a swearing-in ceremony at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata, a site historically linked to the state's Left and opposition politics. The event marks the BJP's first government formation in the state, following a decisive electoral performance that ended decades of dominance by regional parties.
Brigade Parade Ground, also known as the Maidan and owned by the Indian Army, has long served as a political stage for major ideological movements. From CPI(M) rallies in the 1970s to Mamata Banerjee's anti-BJP opposition gatherings, the ground has symbolized political legitimacy in Bengal. Previous events hosted global figures including Nikita Khrushchev, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and Hugo Chavez, reinforcing its role in India's broader political narrative.
Preparations are underway for an open-air ceremony expected to draw nearly 100,000 attendees, with large rainproof tents being erected and security grids established across the Maidan. A separate enclosure is being set up for VVIPs, including judges, diplomats, industrialists, and public figures. The BJP had previously used the site for a major rally on March 14, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which the party billed as the launch of its 'Paribartan Yatra'.
Political analysts say the choice of venue underscores the BJP's effort to claim symbolic legitimacy in a state where it was once electorally marginal. 'Every dominant political force in Bengal has sought emotional and symbolic legitimacy through the Brigade,' a Kolkata-based political analyst said. 'The BJP wants to visually communicate that Bengal's political centre of gravity has shifted.'
The swearing-in ceremony will be followed by the allocation of portfolios and the convening of the first cabinet meeting, scheduled for early next week. The state election commission is expected to release the full list of elected members shortly, paving the way for the new government's legislative agenda.
