Mamata Banerjee, the leader of the Trinamool Congress, called for unity among opposition forces in West Bengal against the BJP on Saturday, a week after her party's defeat in the state assembly elections. Banerjee appealed to Left parties, ultra-Left groups, student unions, and NGOs opposed to the BJP to come together under a joint platform, saying 'our first enemy is the BJP.'
On the same day, Suvendu Adhikari took oath as West Bengal's first BJP chief minister at Kolkata's Brigade Parade Ground, marking the end of the Trinamool Congress's 15-year hold on power in the state.
The oath-taking ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and other senior BJP leaders.
Banerjee also claimed that atrocities were being committed against TMC workers and supporters across the state after the BJP's win, stating that 'hooliganism is going on at places, bad elements have entered their ranks.'
The immediate next steps will involve the new BJP government in West Bengal taking office and beginning its term, with the state's governor having administered the oath of office to Adhikari and other senior leaders.
