Mal Anderson, the first unseeded player to win the U.S. Open men's singles title, has died at the age of 91, Tennis Australia said on Monday (May 11, 2026). He won the 1957 United States Championships, defeating three seeded players and dropping only two sets en route to the title.
Anderson, who began his tennis career on a dirt court on a Queensland farm, also claimed three major doubles titles and helped Australia win the Davis Cup twice. After retiring, he became a mentor to young Australian players, including former world number one Pat Rafter.
"He was a true legend of the game, but more importantly he was a terrific bloke -- humble, generous with his time and always happy to help younger players along," Rafter said. "Tennis in Australia has lost one of its greats, and a lot of us have lost a mate and mentor."
Tennis Australia will honor Anderson during the upcoming Roland Garros tournament, with a minute's silence planned before the men's singles draw.
