On 30 July, a Delhi resident dialled the police control room after his wife refused to break her Karwa Chauth fast upon seeing him. The argument erupted after the husband had just returned home from a year abroad.
Karwa Chauth, a tradition where wives fast for their husbands’ longevity, had been observed by the couple for the past month. The wife had vowed to keep the fast until she saw him again, but grew agitated when he returned.
Police officers from Nihal Vihar station arrived within twenty minutes. The officers spoke separately with each spouse and, according to a senior police officer, the couple agreed to end the fast together after the officers reminded them of the holiday’s intent.
The incident was logged as a domestic dispute and no charges were filed. The husband said he felt relieved that the matter was settled, while the wife admitted that the police presence helped calm the situation.
